Round two Sunday 23 May: Brody Martin prevails to win a thrilling 2021 Sanwell Cottesloe Open
Live leaderboard here round 2
In gathering gloom, rain and wind at Cottesloe Golf Club, Brody Martin flipped a closing bunker shot to inches to secure a 1-shot victory with 7-under 137 ( 66, 71). The closing par avoiding a four-way playoff with Matthew Millar 138 (72, 66), Lake Karrinyup amateur Simon Liddell 138 (70, 68) and Jason Norris 138 (70, 68).
Matthew Millar had bogeyed 17 but secured a birdie on 18, Simon Liddell had birdied 16, 17 and 18 to stake his claim and Jason Norris’ approach had rolled back down the bank on 18 and had a closing bogey for his 6-under total. All were watching as Brody Martin in the last group went from right fairway trap to left front bunker and flipped it out to inches to avoid a four way playoff, which would have likely been a Monday finish.
The Cottesloe Open does have some sudden-death playoff history of recent decades:
In 2003 three West Australians in Dean Alaban, Mal Baker and Terry Pilkadaris all tied with 8-under and headed down the 1″ in the play off. All scored par and back up the 9th Mal Baker was eliminated. The light faded out and the play off continued Monday morning with Alaban and Baker making par on the 10th and 18th holes. They then went down the first, the fifth playoff hole and Alaban scored a birdie to clinch the 2003 Cottesloe Open.
In 2006 Aaron Townsend, Dean Alaban and John O’Sullivan were in a 3-way playoff. All birdied the first, Alaban bogeyed the second (up the ninth) and Aaron Townsend birdied the third playoff hole (the first) to win.
A welcome playing guest at Friday’s Sanwell Corporate Classic was Len Thomas and he owns the ultimate ‘how I lost the Cottesloe Open’ story. In 1964 he was sitting at the presentation awaiting being announced as the winner. The Captain announced the winner is Len…Tidy! Len Thomas felt in his pocket and discovered his winning card still sitting there and he had to wear the DQ. No chance of that these days as players are ushered into the officials room to hand in cards, confirming the great hole by hole live scoring provided by the PGA that adds to spectator and fan interest. Len Thomas went out and won the WA Open the next week by 5 shots, one of many wins in his distinguished career. Happily he did eventually win a Cottesloe Open, in 1975, and is pictured in the happy gang of past Cottesloe Open winners that gathered at the Friday Corporate Classic Dinner.

Simon Liddell is leading amateur and Kelly Rogers medallist:
The leading amateur and winner of the Kelly Rogers Medal was Simon Liddell of Lake Karrinyup with 138 ( 70, 68). Liddell birdied the last three holes, and five of the last seven to overtake Cottesloe’s Michael Hanrahan Smith who had closed with a 6-under 66. The 66 matched the new course record of 66 set Saturday by Brett Rumford and the winner Brody Martin. Hanrahan-Smith shot 4-under 140 (74, 66) and had got to 18 7-under before his par putt lipped out and he bogeyed the last.

The Cottesloe Open recognises and welcomes great stars of times past, and since 2014 we have held a separate simultaneous event, The Cottesloe Senior Invitational and nine eligible players contested the event in 2021.The Cottesloe Senior Invitational had a special poignant touch in 2021 with the winner awarded the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy and the late Lyndsay’s partner Chrissie Fast was along to present the trophy.
Cottesloe Golf Club member, since 1976, and long-term supporter of the Cottesloe Open, Mack Hall, arranged sponsorship from Lexus of Perth, EZGO and Golf Box. The Senior Invitational players competed for a separate purse of $8,000 and the winner Michal Long was awarded the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy.

Sanwell Corporate Classic Friday 21 May a great day with a big highlight ace!
A fabulous Sanwell Corporate Classic on Friday 21 May saw sponsor groups and some of our senior professionals get the chance of a look at the course.
No bigger highlight Friday than Cottesloe member Murray Peter, playing in naming sponsor Fred McMurray’s Sanwell team partnered with distinguished professional Peter O’Malley.
Murray Peter got to the second tee after an opening 4 for 3 points, with a lifetime hole-in-one total of Nil. Peter O’Malley was owning up to 16 lifetime aces, but it was the dashing Murray Peter on a handicap of 23 who dropped his four iron in for a stunning ace on the hole playing 169 metres and 1 for 5 points getting the team score roaring along.
In the team format of 2 scores counting each hole by nightfall the Sanwell team was runner-up with 86 points. Winners on the day were Matthew “‘Spider'” Burton’s Zephyr Wealth team. A fired up Murray Peter even won nearest the pin on 13, beating the field again and went home awash with booty including a return trip for two and a week in Melbourne for the Grand Final as his hole in one prize. Well done Murray!

Tournament History – a 73-year tradition continues
After a year off in 2020 responding to Covid-19 restrictions, the historic Cottesloe Open continues its 73 year history. It is the second longest running professional tournament in Western Australia, after the WA Open Championship that commenced in 1913.
Professionals will compete for a purse of $34,000 in the 2021 Sanwell Cottesloe Open, and we thank and recognise our naming rights sponsor Sanwell Plumbing & Civil.
The 2021 Cottesloe Open is also supported by multiple Hole Sponsors, of which we would also like to thank.
Sponsors and their guests will enjoy a fabulous day at the Sanwell Corporate Classic, with 18-holes and then a pre-tournament dinner. The Corporate Classic dinner continues the fine tradition of inviting all past local Cottesloe Open champions, which is always a great evening of recognition and reminiscing with the ex-champions proudly wearing their tournament winner’s jacket.
A regular guest at Corporate Classic Dinners was 1957 Champion Pat Prendiville, pictured below at the 2018 dinner, and we note with sadness his passing aged 96 on 5 July 2019. The great Cottesloe legend Larry Harke, also pictured, passed on 9 November 2018, aged 88.
Cottesloe Senior Invitational – The Late Lyndsay Stephen to be recognised
The Cottesloe Open also recognises and welcomes great stars of times past, and since 2014 we have held a separate simultaneous event, The Cottesloe Senior Invitational.
The Cottesloe Senior Invitational will have a special poignant touch in 2021 with the winner awarded the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy. Cottesloe Golf Club member, since 1976, and long-term supporter of the Cottesloe Open, Mack Hall, has arranged sponsorship from Lexus of Perth, EZGO and Golf Box. The Senior Invitational players will compete for a purse of $8,000, and the winner will be awarded the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy.

The Club is grateful for the sponsorship support of this Senior Invitational event, and also to be able to contribute to his memory in awarding the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy to the Seniors Invitational winner.
The Seniors Invitational field includes some big names of times past:
Michael Clayton, Michael Harwood, Peter O’Malley, Glenn Joyner, Lucian Tinkler, Tim Elliott, Michael Long and Wayne Smith. Wayne Smith and Michael Long both past Cottesloe Open Champions who have later won the Cottesloe Senior Invitational and Michael Long winner in 2019 will defend his Senior Invitational title. Will we see an amateur winner in 2021?
The legendary Cottesloe amateur Kelly Rogers, a Cottesloe member 1938 to 2002 won the first Cottesloe Open in 1948 and seven in all, the last in 1963.
Kelly Rogers was a honorary member for life of the club at the time of his passing at age 86 in 2002, and it was decided to perpetuate his memory by awarding the Kelly Rogers Medal to the best amateur in the Cottesloe Open from 2003 forward. The Cottesloe Open leading amateur recognition was a fitting choice, with Kelly having won the Cottesloe Open outright in each of its first four years from 1948 and seven times in all up to 1963. No greater tribute could be paid to Kelly’s playing longevity as a champion of the game than the thirty-one-year gap between his first Cottesloe club championship in 1948 and his last in 1979. Kelly was also WA Amateur champion 1947/53/62, WA Open Champion 1953, WA Foursomes Champion 1953/66 and five times a state representative in a fabulous career that stretched back to winning the 1934 WA Junior Championship when a Sea View member prior to joining Cottesloe.
WA Golf Industry Hall of Champions members Graham Marsh (1967) Terry Gale (1969, 1973) and Roger Mackay (1980/81/ 82) are amongst the 27 amateur winners since the tournament commenced in 1948.Despite the strong history of 27 amateur winners of the Cottesloe Open, Michael Foster (Hartfield CC) in 2007 is only amateur winner in the 23 events played since Greg Chalmers won as an amateur in 1995.
The 2021 Sanwell Cottesloe Open has attracted a strong field of the State’s leading amateurs, all just completed a 7-round Metropolitan pennant season that will see Joondalup host Lake Karrinyup in the Division 1 playoffs in a 36-hole final on Sunday 31 May.
Lake Karrinyup star Joe Owen plays very well at Cottesloe and will be defending his leading amateur title, being the 2019 Kelly Rogers Medallist in 2019 with 140, winning by a shot from Cottesloe number one Michael Hanrahan Smith who will also be favoured on his home course. The honour board of Kelly Rogers Medal below includes players who have gone on to professional careers including Cottesloe’s Curtis Luck and Royal Fremantle’s Min Woo Lee.
Our Course: Cottesloe Golf Club WA Golf Industry Metropolitan Course of the Year
The 2021 Sanwell Cottesloe Open is the first open tournament to play the Cottesloe Golf Club course with changes on holes 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8, that structurally completes a progressive course master plan under course architect Graham Marsh. Graham was a prominent amateur member of Cottesloe 1964-1967, immediately before turning professional in 1968. Graham was appointed course architect in 1993 and has directed all course changes and improvements since. Competitors will enjoy the smooth running 777 Bent Grass greens on holes 3-8 and some stunning new green shapes on holes 5, 6, 7, with plans for all greens to have 777 Bent in place over the next couple of summers. The Cottesloe course was awarded 2020 Metropolitan Course of the Year at the 2021 WA Golf Industry Awards, and is in magnificent condition for the tournament. Graham Marsh is on the Cottesloe Open Trophy twice, 1967 as an amateur and 1968 in his first professional year.
Hot scoring expected!
The Cottesloe Open has seen some hot scoring of recent decades, both professional and amateur as the honour board below shows.
The Cottesloe Open winning score has averaged 9-under 135 since 2003, with some stunning individual rounds. Andrew McKenzie shot a closing 10-under 62 to win with 14-under 130 in the club’s Centenary Year of 2008. David Bransdon also shot 62 in closing to win the 2017 event with 13-under 131.
All are welcome at Cottesloe Golf Club to enjoy the 2021 Sanwell Cottesloe Open. Free entry, parking and open access to all food and beverage facilities.
Live scoring links from PGA Australia are at the top of the page and will be progressively updated with reports and photo galleries during the tournament.
