Posthumous Guinness World Record to Cottesloe Golf Club Member
Late Cottesloe Golf Club member, Barry Harper has been recognised as the new Guinness World record holder for the most official “holes in one achieved on the same hole (in competition)”.
Barry was a member at Cottesloe for 57 years before his passing in 2018 aged 78, but during the years of 1980 to 2004, he achieved something that only most golfers could dream of! During these years, not one but five holes in one were achieved on Cottesloe’s 13th hole, but it didn’t stop there as Barry shot a total of seven holes in ones over the course of his golfing career.
Club Historian Phil Ryan came across this record when the winner from Club Catalina Bateman Bay NSW, was announced for his four holes in one in February 2023. Phil knowing all there is to know about Cottesloe history, realised he could produce a better statistic and proceeded to gather the evidence on Barry’s aces before presenting them to the Guinness World Records.
Barry was an avid golfer who reached a career low handicap of 6, but unfortunately never had his name etched on any of the Club’s Honour Boards. He was a previous Club Captain and remains the club’s all time pre-eminent hole in one specialist, with no fewer than 7 in total and his trusty 5 wood delivering the goods for 4 of the 5 aces.
Barry’s total of seven aces has earned him the title of the highest holes in one scorer at Cottesloe, but the individual five aces on Cottesloe’s 13th hole, have now earned him worldwide fame for such an outstanding achievement.
Members and staff alike at Cottesloe are excited by Barry’s Guinness World Record recognition, and although he is not here today to accept the award, we are certain his family and friends will be pleased with the acknowledgement.
The record can be viewed on the Guinness World Record website.
