75th Sanwell Cottesloe Open to Brett Rumford

9th May 2023

The 75th Sanwell Cottesloe Open was completed at Cottesloe Golf Club – Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May.

Rising young Professional Hayden Hopewell took a 2-shot lead into Sunday after an impressive 7-under 65 and an exciting finish seemed assured, with four players on 67 and 12 players under 70 in Round 1.

Another thrilling finish evolved on Sunday and saw Brett Rumford, Oliver Goss and Hayden Hopewell tie at 9-under par after the 36 holes. The three returned down 18 for a sudden-death playoff and Brett Rumford landed a winning birdie in a great putt down a slope from outside 30 feet to win his first Sanwell Cottesloe Open.

As detailed in the tournament history link above, the Sanwell Cottesloe Open incorporates three keenly sought after events:

Sanwell Cottesloe Open:
Professionals and amateurs compete for the Cottesloe Open Trophy and $30,000 prize purse for the professionals.

In the opening round Saturday, rising young professional star from Royal Fremantle Hayden Hopewell again showed his liking for our course. Playing from 10th tee early at 7.20am he was out in 33 with just a bogey on 13 and home in 32 for his 65, just a shot off the existing course record set by Brady Watt in the 2022 event. Professionals Brett Rumford, Oliver Goss, Brendan Chant and Lake Karrinyup amateur Joe Owen are two shots away on 5-under 67. An exciting finish seems assured once again.

On Sunday excellent playing conditions saw good crowds out and plenty of on course excitement to follow.

Oliver Goss playing in the second last group birdied 14 and 16 to lead but a bogey 5 on 18, after a chip from fringe was short, saw a three way playoff emerge after the following Brett Rumford and Hayden Hopewell secured closing pars on 18. Hayden Hopewell had a great eagle on 14 and then  closed with four pars. Brett Rumford  secured a great birdie on 14 after trees with drive and second and an important up and down birdie from 50 metres on 17.

In the playoff all three found the 18th fairway. Rumford away first to 30 feet left, Hopewell to 12 feet with a strong birdie chance and Goss just in fringe.Brett Rumford showed his short game wizardry, holing with the last roll down and across a slope. Hayden Hopewell was unable to hole the matching birdie and Brett Rumford  landed his first Cottesloe Open title.
